After reading the last several posts on another blog www.guntotingliberal.com/archive/502
I thought that an honest look at what conservative values are would be good.
One of the comments included a list of conservative values. I agreed with a lot of what was said in the list, but don't truely see current conservative politicans following that list as closely as they present themselves to.
I also think that many moderate liberals, which I would consider myself to be, can agree with some of things about this list.
I will give a shorted version of that list here, but please feel free to see it for yourself.
1. Don't over tax
2. Limit Government so that each American is responsible for success or failure
3. Hold People accounable for their actions.
4. Support our military
5. Support each persons right to exorsize their religion (or lack there of)
6. Oppose socailism.
7. Abortion is wrong.
8. Global warming is a myth.
9. The public education system is poor.
10. Promote pure Capitolism
My thoughts are: (not exculsive here)
Socailism is not THAT bad, but not what I would chose here.
In cases where the mothers life is in danger, rape, incest, and other similar situations abortion may be a possible exception to #6. Abortion as a form of birth control is sickening to me.
Science can prove and disprove Global Warming, depending on how studies are done.
Capitolism is good, but the form of capitolism in place in the US today is far from pure.

The trouble I have will labeling "conservative values" is that for some, conservative values references the economic/government angle, and for some it references the social/religious angle. The one side doesn't necessarily agree with the other on what conservative values are. The social/religious angle doesn't tend to agree with pure capitolism, but tolerates it in "their" party. And the capitalists don't tend to care so much about the religious rights, but tolerates it in "their" party.
At least, that's what tends to happen when you look at conservatism through party lenses.

And to echo Steph (who's a pretty damn smart lady) every political "label" will contain many different beliefs all mashed together to create the overall "party."
I see that the ideology behind it as SLIGHTLY apealing.
Captialism is not working to well here right now, either, as far as expamles of things working.
I will do some research and get back to this.
It is very clear that what we have in place in America today is a reverse-socialism, in which income and wealth are being transferred from those who can't afford it to those who don't have the time to count it.
How is this being accomplished?
-Municipal concessions to corporations, paid for by municipal taxpayers. Most of the time, the corp will pull up and leave anyway, after having extracted every freebie it can get out of the taxpayer.
-A policy of tax "cuts" for the wealthiest coupled with sharp increases in spending means that future generations will pay off what the rich are getting back today. And many of the bonds being used to finance those deficits are also being purchased by the rich, making the interest payments a direct transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich.
A "free" trade policy that rewards corporations who move their facilities to places where no labor or environmental regulations exist. These moves are quite often subsidized by the Government-you and me. We pay to have our throats cut.
This is the modern-day definition of "conservatism." The emphasis is most assuredly on the "con." I laugh when I hear a neocon cry about "socialism," since he or she is a great advocate of the reverse-form of it.
Reverse socialism--I like that phrase! Jolly Roger, I think you should trademark it!
In the past, true conservatives tend to favor lower taxes, smaller government, and fiscal restraint. NONE of these can be found in today's American government. And as Jolly Roger points out, we do in fact have redistribution of wealth in today's society--much as Bush's followers would hate to admit it. It's just that the wealth is being shifted upward, not downward.

but I admire anyone who is getting involved at any level.
as far as socialism not working anywhere, umm, how about china? england? france? europe and russia, greece and japan.
just to name a few, and guess what, they all have better education and health care than US- and havent had as many huge economic failures as the USA - weve had two within 80 years -
